Frequently asked questions
What is a break-even price on Etsy?
It is the sale price at which your profit is exactly zero after Etsy's listing, transaction, payment-processing and ads fees plus your product and shipping costs. Sell below it and every order loses money.
How do I calculate break-even units?
Break-even units = fixed monthly costs ÷ contribution profit per order. If your shop costs $120/month and each sale nets $12, you need 10 sales a month before you earn anything.
Should I ever price near break-even?
Only deliberately — for a launch, a review-building push or clearing dead stock. Etsy ads and returns make sustained break-even pricing a fast route to burnout.
Do Offsite Ads change my break-even price?
Dramatically. A 15% Offsite Ads fee can raise the break-even price by 20–25%, which is why some shops price the ad fee into every listing.
Does the break-even price include my labour?
Only if you include labour in the product cost field. Add materials + packaging + (hours × hourly rate) to break even on a fully-costed basis.
