Ask a store owner their margin and you usually get retail price minus product cost. That number is fiction. Between Shopify Payments processing, shipping, ad spend, app subscriptions and returns, the gap between "gross margin" and money in the bank is routinely 8–12 percentage points. This guide gives you the real formula, every 2026 fee with actual rates, and worked examples in USD and GBP — then hands you the free Shopify Profit Calculator so you can price properly.

The Shopify profit formula (memorise this one line)

Net profit = Revenue − COGS − Shipping − Marketing − Payment processing − Overhead. Margin % = net profit ÷ revenue × 100.

The two lines people skip are payment processing and overhead. Processing looks small per order (2.9% + $0.30) but at a $30 AOV that is 3.9% of revenue — often a fifth of your entire net margin. Overhead is your Shopify plan, apps and domain divided by monthly orders; at 200 orders a month, a $39 plan plus $60 of apps is another $0.50 per order.

Put your own numbers into the Shopify profit calculator and it computes all of it per order, including margin percentage.

Every Shopify fee in 2026, with real rates

Subscription: Basic $39/mo, Grow $105/mo, Advanced $399/mo (US pricing; annual billing lowers each).

Shopify Payments processing (US): 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced for online card orders.

Shopify Payments processing (UK): roughly 1.7% + £0.25 on Basic for domestic cards, with international cards adding around 1–2%.

Third-party gateway fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.5% on Advanced — charged on top of whatever PayPal or Stripe already takes if you don't use Shopify Payments. Check the PayPal side with our PayPal Fee Calculator.

Currency conversion: around 1.5% (2% in some regions) when a customer pays in a currency you don't settle in. Cross-border stores absorb this silently.

Chargebacks: $15 per dispute plus the lost goods — budget 0.3–0.6% of revenue if you sell high-ticket items.

Worked example: a $49.99 US product

Revenue $49.99. COGS $14.00. Shipping paid by you $6.50. Marketing at a $12.00 blended CAC. Shopify Payments on Basic: 2.9% × 49.99 + 0.30 = $1.75. Overhead $0.50.

Net profit = 49.99 − 14.00 − 6.50 − 12.00 − 1.75 − 0.50 = $15.24, a 30.5% net margin. Healthy.

Now raise CAC to $19 — an entirely normal Q4 swing — and profit drops to $8.24, a 16.5% margin. Same product, same price, half the profit. That is why margin has to be recalculated whenever ad costs move, not once at launch.

Worked example: a £35 UK dropshipping order

Revenue £35.00. Supplier cost £11.00. Shipping £4.00 (supplier-fulfilled). Ads £9.50. Shopify Payments UK Basic: 1.7% × 35 + 0.25 = £0.85. Overhead £0.40.

Net profit = 35 − 11 − 4 − 9.50 − 0.85 − 0.40 = £9.25, a 26.4% margin — before VAT. If you are VAT-registered, the £35 includes 20% VAT, so your true net revenue is £29.17 and profit falls to about £3.42, a 9.8% margin. Run the split with the VAT Calculator.

This is the single biggest miscalculation UK and EU dropshippers make: treating a VAT-inclusive price as revenue.

What is a good Shopify profit margin?

Under 10% net is fragile — one ad-cost increase or return wave wipes it out. 10–20% is the normal band for general ecommerce and most dropshipping. 20–30% is strong and usually means differentiated product or good AOV. Above 30% net typically means private label, handmade, or digital.

Gross margin should sit at 60–70% before ads if you intend to buy traffic. Anything below 50% gross leaves no room for a paid channel and forces you to depend on organic, email and repeat purchase.

Five levers that move Shopify margin fastest

Raise AOV, not just price. Bundles and volume tiers spread the fixed $0.30 processing fee and the shipping cost across more revenue — the fastest structural margin gain available.

Switch to Shopify Payments if you're on a third-party gateway: killing the 2% platform surcharge on Basic is free money.

Upgrade the plan when the math flips. Grow costs $66 more than Basic but drops processing 0.2% and the gateway fee 1%; above roughly $10k monthly revenue it usually pays for itself.

Renegotiate shipping with real volume numbers, or move the free-shipping threshold just above your AOV.

Cut CAC before cutting COGS. A 10% conversion-rate improvement is usually cheaper to buy than a 10% supplier discount.

FAQs

How do I calculate Shopify profit?

Net profit = revenue − COGS − shipping − marketing − payment processing fees − overhead. Divide net profit by revenue for margin percentage. The free Shopify Profit Calculator does all of it per order.

What is a good Shopify profit margin?

10–20% net margin is typical, 20–30% is strong, and above 30% is excellent and usually means private-label or premium products. Below 10% is fragile.

What are Shopify's payment fees in 2026?

Shopify Payments charges roughly 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic in the US, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. UK domestic cards are around 1.7% + £0.25.

Does the Shopify profit calculator work for dropshipping?

Yes — enter supplier cost as COGS, supplier shipping as shipping and your ad spend as marketing to see real per-order dropshipping profit.

Should I include VAT in Shopify revenue?

No. If your price is VAT-inclusive, divide by 1.20 (UK) first — VAT is collected on behalf of the tax authority and is never your revenue.

How much profit does the average Shopify store make?

Median net margin sits around 10–15% once ads and fees are counted. Stores reporting 40% are almost always quoting gross margin, not net.

Is the Shopify profit calculator free?

Yes — it runs entirely in your browser, with no sign-up and no data leaving your device.
